What are the impacts of Industry 4.0 on work?

Industry 4.0 and the use of new technologies are transforming production tools and professions. The way of working in such an environment is no longer the same and requires new skills. One of the major challenges of this industrial revolution is to keep people at the centre of this evolution by introducing them to the jobs of the future and by supporting the transformation of more traditional jobs.

The new professions of Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 feeds on information. All the data collected in the different processes of the company must be compiled and understood to be useful. They require trained personnel to become data analysts, data engineers or data scientists.

The maintenance or production sectors will also evolve in industrial companies thanks to Industry 4.0. The use of Big Data and augmented reality allows us to better anticipate the necessary interventions on the machines.

The maintenance jobs occupied by operators within Industry 4.0 as well as managers are increasingly becoming foresight jobs.

In another register,Industry 4.0 through automation and the use of robots bring responsibility and autonomy to the line operator in industrial companies.

Finally, the evolution of work also concerns positions in the supply chain. These require more flexibility and agility to improve the supplier-customer relationship or to handle new tools (AI, robots, etc.).

Industry 4.0 and work: what about new technologies and the human being?

Industry 4.0 is so named because it is the last step before more advanced robotization in the industrial sector. Thanks to digitalization, automation and big data, the industrial company is becoming smart.

The challenges of Industry 4.0 are to be able to respond quickly to customer needs while respecting the environment and keeping people at the center of the process. Digital transformation will change jobs and create new ones in the service and industry sectors.

The industrial revolution driven by AI and the intervention of robots implies new skills: autonomy, adaptation and agility are required and will alleviate the drudgery of assembly line work. Industry 4.0 can affect all sectors. It does not lead to the sidelining of humans by the use of robots, but rather it will generate more valuable jobs in each industrial sector.

Training employees and supporting them in the fundamental changes to their workstations are part of the tasks of companies that want to successfully integrate new technologies into their manufacturing and production processes.
