Smart City: innovation for smart cities and urban transport

The concept of smart city technologies consists of using new technologies to support the development of cities. It allows to face major challenges, such as the installation of a smart mobility service or to build more connected territorial spaces thanks to innovation. Smart cities can also manage waste collection and treatment in a more optimized way. They become smart cities by creating a safe and attractive environment for citizens.

Innovation at the service of territories with the smart city

By becoming a smart city, the city becomes aware of the important issue that urban mobility plays in terms of ecology and territorial development. It must therefore become a smart, more connected, more attractive, more resilient and more inclusive city. Innovation therefore plays a key role in these changes. The aim is to develop the capacity of smart cities to share data by involving local public and private actors.

The aim of this approach is:

    • to make traffic flow more smoothly,
    • to optimise the travel time of transport users,
    • to send real-time information to citizens about free parking spaces,
    • etc.

It is a question of mobilising collective intelligence that goes well beyond the smart city metropolis to address the problems of urban densification, waste treatment or the maintenance of certain public services in rural areas.

Innovations that impact a multitude of urban services

Smart cities opt for a more sustainable and efficient urban life for their inhabitants. They therefore focus on:

    • a more responsible energy economy,
    • short circuits,
    • open data for all,
    • the construction of positive energy buildings,
    • etc.

The smart city is based on the use of smart city sensors to improve the daily life of the inhabitants. Sensors are placed in the city to restrict the use of artificial light or noise control. The metropolis can thus make real savings in energy and money thanks to this system.

Residents can also become actors of their city by sharing their data via sensors or by using dedicated services that take into account their uses and needs.

With all these new technologies, life in a smart city aims to improve the daily life of its inhabitants:

    • Everyday problems are being solved by digital solutions.
    • Transportation in the city becomes easier to use thanks to optimized traffic management.
    • New residential buildings produce more energy than they consume.
    • Users can move around more easily by receiving information in real time.
