The geolocation and counting solution for workers on the RER C construction site for the SNCF
The SNCF has trusted ELA Innovation, Wirepas and Synox for its RER C maintenance project. This challenge consisted in deploying in less than 2 months a communication infrastructure to ensure the safety of workers on 8 kilometers of tunnel.
The implementation
To meet this challenge, a People Counting and Tracking 4.0 solution has been implemented. One of the most important points was to secure more than thirty entrances/exits by counting the passages of the personnel without using electrical and computer wiring.
From a technical point of view, the location solution is based on a mesh network of fixed tags
and mobile. The former, also called anchors, are installed at regular intervals (25 meters) throughout the site, while the latter are carried by the workers.
The mobile Blue PUCK ID Mesh transmits signals to the various anchors, which in turn pick up all the dialogue and transmit the information to the gateway.
However, since the data returned by the sensors is raw, it is transformed into GPS data (latitude and longitude) by the Wirepas Positioning Engine and visualized on the Synox data visualization platform, SoDATA#Viz.
I had already experienced other solutions and was pleased to find that the ELA Innovation solution was particularly easy to use. I am, we are happy to keep the solution!

TURNOVER: 20M€.
Location: France
Scope
- + 8 km of tunnel
- 30+ inputs and outputs without electrical wiring
Goals
- Count and locate workers in real time
- Have a minimum of 8 years autonomy on the deployed solution
- Reduce the annual cost of the metering solution
- Add evacuation alarm functionality
- Locate workers in tunnels to ensure their protection in case of evacuation
Results
- Cost reduction through long-term stabilization of the solution
- Installation of a sound and light system to accelerate evacuation and increase worker safety

The results
In case of tunnel evacuation, it is possible to remotely activate an audible (buzzer) and visual (LED) alarm from the Synox business application. The indicator lights are visible on the entire network of tags (anchors and mobiles) and the audible alert is triggered only on the mobile tags. The battery-powered infrastructure, requiring no connection, facilitates the deployment of the solution and ensures an extremely competitive total cost of ownership.
