Indoor geolocation and worker counting solution for SNCF on RER C construction site
SNCF chose ELA Innovation, along with Wirepas and Synox, to carry out the RER C maintenance project. The mission, to be completed in less than two months, was to set up a communications infrastructure over an 8-kilometer tunnel to guarantee employee safety.
The implementation
To meet this challenge, a 4.0 technology for counting and locating individuals was deployed. A major priority was to ensure security at more than thirty access points, by recording staff movements without the need for electrical or data cable installations.
From a technical point of view, the technology is based on a set of interconnected tags. Fixed tags, also known as anchors, are placed at 25-meter intervals across the site, while portable tags are attached to workers. Blue PUCK ID Mesh handheld devices send signals to the anchors, which receive all communications and route the information to the central gateway. However, since the data collected by the sensors is raw, it is converted into GPS coordinates using the Wirepas Positioning Engine system and can then be consulted on our SoDATA#Viz platform, dedicated to data visualization.
I had already experienced other solutions and was pleased to find that the ELA Innovation solution was particularly easy to use. I am, we are happy to keep the solution!

150,000 people
TURNOVER: 20M€.
Location: France
Scope
- + 8 km of tunnel
- 30+ inputs and outputs without electrical wiring
Goals
- Track and identify employee locations along 8 kilometers of tunnel instantly
- Guarantee an operating life of at least 8 years for the system implemented
- Reduce annual costs associated with the metering system
- Integrate an alert option for evacuation situations
- Locate workers in tunnels to ensure their protection in case of evacuation
Results
- Cost reduction through long-term stabilization of the solution
- Installation of a sound and light system to accelerate evacuation and increase worker safety

The results
In case of tunnel evacuation, it is possible to remotely activate an audible (buzzer) and visual (LED) alarm from the Synox business application. The indicator lights are visible on the entire network of tags (anchors and mobiles) and the audible alert is triggered only on the mobile tags. The battery-powered infrastructure, requiring no connection, facilitates the deployment of the solution and ensures an extremely competitive total cost of ownership.
