Securing interventions on railroads, thanks to connected sensors
Before working with Synox, VapéRail could hardly identify faulty equipment in an “intelligent” way since interventions on the tracks were only done manually. To verify that the track system was operational, an operator had to go to the site.
It was therefore important to find a solution connected remotely and in real time in order to optimize interventions and improve the safety of operators.
Rail temperature measurement: a real issue for the railway world
VapéRail emphasized that the arail is an object that will deform under high temperatures and is therefore sensitive to its environment. This implies speed reductions and therefore a chain reaction with consequences impacting even track management.
The main challenge for operators is to monitor reliable, easy-to-read data that they can receive at the right time. To bring our touch of innovation to this activity, we have accompanied the customer from the beginning to the present day, notably with our dedicated support and a single contact person.
Moreover, after a POC phase and successful deployment, we were able to repeat the experience with the installation of various connected sensors: clamping, geolocation, rail displacement, and train passage detection.
Real-time data: which solution is best?
With the data uploaded to the Synox platform and to their control room, operators can know the state of the network and the temperature of the rail and the ambient temperature in real time.
To meet VapéRail’s expectations, Synox experts decided to choose LoRa network connectivity and to support them in the deployment of a private and operated network to guarantee the reliability and security of the data transmitted.
With the SoDATA#Viz data management platform, VapéRail can set and manage its alerts, customise the trigger thresholds and use the mapping to visualise the necessary interventions at a glance.
And, with the SoM2M#IoT object management platform, the rail specialist can manage its fleet of connected sensors very easily.
It was therefore essential to obtain an innovative and revolutionary solution to know the exact temperature of the rail, remotely, in real time and to place the wireless sensor as close to the rail as possible. Loïc TREBUIL, Digital Manager of Vapérail.
VapéRail was looking for a sensor with many innovative criteria, including a long battery life to limit maintenance related to sensor replacement. With the deployment of the sensors, lane managers were able to quickly identify the benefits of a fully connected solution. With the platform SoDATA#Viz platform, they analyze the data that comes back in real time.

The results
When Visiativ, a Synox partner, equipped VapéRail on the product design side, it identified Synox to analyze the type of sensors to be integrated into the VapéRail systems and to enable data transmission. This data feedback allows the detection of potential technical failures.
